New program preps teens for STEM careers
Starting this fall, Mountlake Terrace High School will offer a STEM Magnet High School, a program open to all incoming ninth-graders. With a heavy emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math, the accelerated four-year program will prepare students for STEM programs at universities in Washington and nationwide. Students involved all four years will receive a STEM diploma in addition to a regular high school diploma.

EDINBORO — General McLane High School will soon offer a special new program for students interested in engineering or medical technology careers. The new program, named the Academy of Arts and Engineering, will be open to students in grades 10 through 12 beginning in the 2012-13 school year.
University of Illinois to lead U.S. DOT research center
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded a grant of $3.5 million to a multi-university consortium led by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to establish a rail transportation and engineering research center. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has been a leader in rail education and research for more than a century. The railroad engineering program at Illinois has the most extensive curriculum in railroad engineering of any university in North America, complemented by an extensive research program in rail engineering and transportation through the Illinois Rail Transportation and Engineering Center (RailTEC).
